Mathematics Beyond Numbers: A Journey of Discovery and Joy

Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding.” - William Paul Thurston

On May 7, 2026, the students of Classes VI–VIII had the privilege of participating in an invigorating and intellectually enriching workshop on “Mathematics in Everyday Life”, conducted by the esteemed resource person, Ms.Uma Patra.

The workshop beautifully transcended the conventional boundaries of classroom learning by seamlessly connecting abstract mathematical concepts with practical, real-world experiences. Aligned with the visionary principles of the National Education Policy 2020, the session strongly emphasized experiential and activity-based learning, encouraging students to engage with mathematics not merely as a subject, but as a way of understanding the world around them.

The atmosphere brimmed with excitement and curiosity as learners enthusiastically explored the fascinating world of Magic Math, discovering patterns, tricks, and logical connections that transformed numbers into engaging puzzles. Thoughtfully curated paper-folding activities further added a creative dimension to the session, enabling students to visualize mathematical ideas through hands-on exploration and collaborative learning.

What made the workshop truly remarkable was its ability to make mathematics feel approachable, joyful, and deeply meaningful. Through simple yet innovative activities, students developed logical reasoning, critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills in an environment that celebrated curiosity and participation.

The session served as a powerful reminder that mathematics is not confined to textbooks and formulas, it exists in everyday decisions, patterns, structures, and experiences. When taught with imagination, passion, and purpose, mathematics becomes a subject that inspires confidence and wonder in every learner.

An exceptional learning experience filled with innovation, interaction, and reflective learning, the workshop left students and educators alike motivated to embrace new ways of teaching and learning mathematics. It was indeed a memorable step towards nurturing joyful, lifelong learners.
