The School Report Card Parents Never Get: 10 Things to Measure Before Choosing a School
04 Nov 2026
Choosing a school is one of the biggest decisions a parent makes. Yet, the checklist often begins and ends with fees, board affiliation, infrastructure, transport and academic results.
These things matter. But they don't tell you what your child's everyday experience will actually be.
Before choosing a school, ask these 10 questions:
1. Can my child approach a teacher comfortably?
A good school should make children feel safe asking questions, seeking help and expressing themselves.
2. Does the school recognise individual strengths?
Every child is different. Look for a school that notices talents beyond marks—whether in science, sport, art, communication or problem-solving.
3. How seriously are sports treated?
Sports should not be an occasional activity. They build discipline, resilience, teamwork and confidence.
4. Are creativity and the arts part of everyday learning?
Music, art, theatre and creative expression help children imagine, communicate and think differently.
5. Does every child get leadership opportunities?
Leadership isn't just about being a prefect or class monitor. Children need opportunities to organise, speak, collaborate and take responsibility.
6. How does the school handle failure?
Ask what happens when a child doesn't perform well. Does the school simply label the result—or help the child learn from it?
7. How much does learning go beyond textbooks?
Projects, experiments, competitions, field experiences, clubs and real-world exposure can turn information into understanding.
8. Is technology being used meaningfully?
Smart classrooms alone don't make education future-ready. Technology should enhance curiosity, collaboration, research and problem-solving.
9. Does the school prepare children for life—not just examinations?
Communication, emotional resilience, decision-making, teamwork, adaptability and responsible citizenship matter long after a report card is forgotten.
10. Will my child be known as an individual?
Perhaps the most important question of all. Will teachers know your child's interests, strengths, challenges and personality—or will your child simply be another name on a register?
Look Beyond the Report Card
The right school isn't necessarily the one with the highest scores or the most impressive infrastructure. It is the one that gives your child the space, support and opportunities to become capable, confident and curious.
At SAI International School, these broader dimensions of education—from academics and sports to creativity, leadership and experiential learning—are an important part of the educational experience.
So, before making your decision, don't just ask, "How well does this school perform?"
Ask the more important question:
"How well will my child grow here?"
